Paul D. Shuff, M.D., an ear, nose and throat doctor who volunteered much of his time for people in need, died Saturday (May 31, 2008) of cancer at St. John's Mercy Hospital. He was 65 and a resident of Ladue.
Dr. Shuff practiced otolaryngology for 40 years and cared for more than 20,000 patients. He regularly volunteered his services to various local causes and gave free medical services monthly for 15 years for the rural poor in Pilot Knob, Mo.
Dr. Shuff was born in Cincinnati and graduated from the University of Notre Dame and then from St. Louis University Medical School in 1969. After graduating, he remained in St. Louis, practicing at St. Mary's and Cardinal Glennon hospitals, eventually consolidating his offices at St. John's Mercy Hospital.
Dr. Shuff was a former member of the Missouri Athletic Club Governing Board and a member of the St. Louis Cathedral Choir and St. Louis Veiled Prophet organizations.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Mary Flynn Shuff; two daughters, Mary Eagen Shuff of University City and Catherine Elizabeth Shuff of Ladue; five sons, Paul David Shuff Jr. of Clayton, Daniel Joseph Shuff of Dallas, John Ellsworth Shuff of Brentwood, Mark Patrick Shuff of Dallas and Patrick Devanney Shuff of University City; two brothers, John Ellsworth Shuff of Boca Raton, Fla., and Thomas M. Shuff of Chicago; and two grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon today at the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica, 4431 Lindell Boulevard. The body will be cremated.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Cathedral Music Program, 4431 Lindell Boulevard, St. Louis, Mo. 63108 or the Paul D. Shuff, M.D. Scholarship Fund at Chaminade College Preparatory, 425 South Lindbergh Boulevard, St. Louis, 63131.
