Dick was my second cousin, and though we were not close as children or in high school, we picked up our friendship late in life, largely by E-mail. I wrote about architecture in New York; he photographed architecture in Phoenix. We shared political views and outrageous stories. I came to think that we would work on a project together one day, but sadly it was not to be.--Jayne Silverstein Merkel

Richard contacted me shortly after moving to Phoenix in the mid-80s, although I don't recall which year.  We had known each other as children because our parents were close friends. Although I had not talked with him nor seen him in many years, we did pick up the pieces.  I was present at his marriage to Josephine, with whom I am still in occasional contact, and Joe and I joined them for dinner before opera on a frequent basis. His death was a tremendous shock to all who knew him  - he was very well liked in the community - and this was evident by the large number of attendees at his memorial service.
