In Memory

Andrew Reis

Hello all,

I am Andy’s eldest son Win. I saw this email group on one of my father’s emails and decided to write to you all with the sad news that he passed away on December 2 in Perpignan.

He suffered a major stroke in mid-October but was on the road to recovery after 3 weeks in ICU and 3 weeks in the Neurology ward. A week prior to his passing he had moved to inpatient rehab, but began having respiratory issues the morning of December 2 and was taken back to the main hospital. Sadly he slipped into a coma and his heart just gave out. The doctors did tell us that he did not suffer because he was in a coma. My brother Elliot and I were not able to go to France to visit him due to COVID restrictions, but we were able to speak to him by phone before he passed away. I last spoke to him just before he moved to inpatient rehab. He was in good spirits are motivated to start rehab so that he could go home.

He is survived by his wife Odile Binoche who lives in Perpignan, me and my wife Marie and our sons Thomas & Gordon who live in San Mateo CA, my brother Elliot and his wife Donna and their son Gregory who live in Evanston IL.

His body has been cremated and the ashes will remain in France until Elliot and I are vaccinated against COVID and able to travel there to deal with his personal effects. We will bring his ashes back to the US and per his wishes he will be buried with our Mom, Leslee Reis, at the United Jewish Cemetery on Montgomery Road in Cincinnati at the Mosler family plot where his parents and grandparents are also buried. We don’t yet know when we will have the burial service but we expect it will be sometime next summer when hopefully everyone is vaccinated and we are able to freely travel. If any of you is interested in attending please reply to me (directly, not reply to all ðŸ˜Š) and I will make sure to add you to the email list.

Sincerely,

Win Reis

I am so sorry to hear of your father's passing.  Thank you for letting us know.  I always enjoyed his long letters letting us know of his adventures in France.  I have a very strong memory of him from our Advanced Math Class.  We had a homework assignment and there was one problem that I could not solve and no one in my family could help me.  I called Andy and he helped me solve the problem.  I think of him every time that I have a similar math problem to solve.  He was very smart and always treated me nicely.  May he rest in peace.

I am so sad to hear to Andy's passing.  I always looked forward to receiving his yearly letters from France.  He covered the politics, the wines, the food, his bridge exploits and his many adventures with clarity, wit and insight.  My condolences to you and Elliot for your loss.    Marcia Beinhart Allen.

Dear Win,

Thank you for letting WHHS know about your Dad.  We were in a number of classes together.  When seated alphabetically, we weren't too far apart as my maiden name was Schwartzman.  Please extend my sympathy to the family. I will miss Andy's chatty and upbeat letters that he would send annually.

May his memory be for a blessing.    Judi Palay
